W
OUT! Bowled. Stuart Broad to Steven Smith. Length ball, outside off stump moves in front Slog, missed to. Smith misses with a big heave, is bowled, and immediately turns and runs off the field. Australia will have ten minutes or so to try and steal a wicket or two before the close of play. What an innings from the former captain in his first game back in whites. He's scored over half of the runs his team made and single-handedly carried them into a competitive position in this match. The pitch is still offering a fair bit and life in the middle will be tough for England's opening batsmen. Will they send out a nightwatchman?

Runs : 0 Bowler: Moeen Ali Wickets : 1
67.2
W
OUT! Caught. Moeen Ali to Peter Siddle. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, inside edge in the air uncontrolled to short leg, by Buttler. That's a sharp chance at short leg and very well taken by Jos Buttler. Moeen Ali is back on and he's got that ball to grip. Siddle pushed forward and the ball went straight off his inside edge to Buttler who reacted well to wrap his hands around the ball. Finally England break this partnership.

W
OUT! L.B.W. Ben Stokes to Pat Cummins. In-swinging length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Leave, hit pad to. That must be close, given by Aleem Dar. Mind you today that doesn't necessarily mean that it's out based on today's events! Stokes set Cummins up for that one. He'd bowled consistently outside off stump but this time it was the inswinger. Cummins had his bat above his head but the ball was going on to hit off stump.

Runs : 0 Bowler: Stuart Broad Wickets : 2

W
OUT! L.B.W. Stuart Broad to James Pattinson. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump on the front foot working, hit pad to. Two in the over for Broad, he has four now. Again round the wicket to the left-hander and he gets him LBW. A bit of nip back in with Pattinson trying to work the ball legside. No complaints from Pattinson but looking at Hawk-Eye as with Warner's dismissal the ball was missing leg stump. The umpires have not had a good day today.
39.4
W
OUT! Caught. Stuart Broad to Tim Paine. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, in the air uncontrolled to deep square leg, by Burns. Tim Paine what have you done? Broad has his hands over his mouth as he can't quite believe it either. A rare short ball from Broad and it wasn't that threatening. Paine took on the pull and struck it well but in the air and straight down the throat of Rory Burns. England are right on top here.

Runs : 0 Bowler: Chris Woakes Wickets : 1

W
OUT! L.B.W. Chris Woakes to Matthew Wade. In-swinging length ball, middle stump on the front foot working, hit pad to. Big shape back in from Woakes, a big appeal, but nothing from Joel Wilson. Well that ball swung a long way out of nowhere. Was there an inside edge? We'll find out as we have yet another review. Paine was perhaps too far across but the shape made his shot look worse than it was. Pitching in line and hitting plenty of middle and off, great stuff from Woakes.

W
OUT! L.B.W. Chris Woakes to Travis Head. Seaming in length ball, to leg on the back foot working, hit pad to. That's thumped into the pads and up goes the finger. Head was caught on the crease, going back to a ball that nipped back in off the pitch. Head chats with his captain until the clock has almost run down then decides to review. There's no bat, the ball beats the inside edge and it's three reds on Hawk-Eye.

W
OUT! Caught. Chris Woakes to Usman Khawaja. Seaming away length ball, middle stump on the front foot defending, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to wicketkeeper, by Bairstow. That sounded like a nick and it's taken by Bairstow. Lovely bowling from Chris Woakes moving the ball across the left-hander just enough. Well England are convinced but Joel Wilson is unmoved. They decide unanimously to use a review. There's a crisp, sharp spike on UltraEdge and Australia are three down.

W
OUT! Caught. Stuart Broad to Cameron Bancroft. Seaming away back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot pushing, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to first slip, by Root. Edged and it carries to Joe Root low down at first slip. Broad has two as England make an excellent start to this match. Movement away off the surface from Broad and Bancroft pushed hard at the ball which proved his downfall. He could easily have left that delivery. Good thinking from Broad to get Bancroft onto the back foot after the half volley the previous ball.

W
OUT! L.B.W. Stuart Broad to David Warner. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot pushing, hit pad to. England like this one even more and so does Aleem Dar! Up goes the finger and there's no challenge from Warner. It was full and Warner played outside the line of the ball with it angling in from round the wicket and it thudded into the pads. Great start for England. Warner isn't going to be happy when he sees the replay, we've just seen Hawk-Eye and it was going down leg on the angle from Broad. The second bit of luck goes England's way.

Runs : 0 Bowler: Nathan Lyon Wickets : 1
135.5
W
OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to James Anderson. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot slog sweeping, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to silly mid on, by Cummins. Spooned tamely and that is a simple chance for Cummins to end the innings and the session. Really useful runs for England down the order, Woakes and Broad helping them to a lead of 90. Australia's colossal stint in the field has finally come to an end, their four main bowlers will be happy for the opportunity to get some rest as we reach the tea break on Day Three. Wickets tumbled in the morning session but they found it much tougher this afternoon with the pitch really looking devoid of all life. Moeen Ali will certainly be a threat for England this evening and it will be interesting to see what part James Anderson plays after seeming to struggle running between the wickets in that partnership with Chris Woakes. The tourists will need someone in the top order to stick with Steve Smith if they are to set a challenging target.

W
OUT! Caught. Pat Cummins to Stuart Broad. Short, outside off stump on the back foot flick, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to fine leg, by Pattinson. Finally the resistance is broken, the bouncer barrage from Cummins does the trick as Broad helps the ball into the grateful hands of Pattinson. He's done a great job for the hosts to rescue them after a little wobble earlier this morning. Cummins is delighted to get some reward for all his toil.

Runs : 0 Bowler: Peter Siddle Wickets : 1
105.5
W
OUT! Caught. Peter Siddle to Jonny Bairstow. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, top edge to first slip, by Warner. Another one, Australia on fire in Birmingham as Bairstow becomes the latest casualty. This is a loose shot from England's keeper and now all of their hard work yesterday looks like being undone. Siddle gets mobbed by his teammates, the tourists sense this is their moment.

Runs : 0 Bowler: Nathan Lyon Wickets : 2
104.6
W
OUT! Bowled. Nathan Lyon to Moeen Ali. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the back foot Leave, Left to. Off stump is flattened as Moeen offers no shot, Lyon has two in the over to turn this match around. Wonderful stuff as one offspinner removes another, the Englishman certainly won't want to see a replay though as it was an awful decision to leave. All of a sudden Australia are charging back into the contest.
104.1
W
OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Rory Burns. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Paine. What a beauty, it was always going to take something special to end this mammoth innings from Burns and Lyon has produced it. The line and length forces the left-hander to defend and then the ball fizzes quickly off the surface to feather the outside edge, with Paine completing a sharp grab behind the stumps. Burns walks off disappointed but there wasn't much he could do about it.

W
OUT! Caught. Pat Cummins to Ben Stokes. Seaming away back of a length, middle stump on the back foot cutting, top edge to wicketkeeper, by Paine. Breakthrough for the tourists and it's a vital one provided by Pat Cummins. This isn't the greatest delivery he will ever bowl but Australia don't care as they gather to high five the bowler. Stokes is gutted, he thought the ball was there to be hit with a horizontal blade however it has kissed the edge through to a relieved Paine.

W
OUT! Caught. Pat Cummins to Jos Buttler. Seaming away length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to third slip, by Bancroft. That's a beauty from Cummins and he's got the wicket of Buttler. The perfect length and it deviated just enough to take the outside edge. Bancroft dived low to his right and took a good catch. This is the best spell of the day both for Cummins and Australia. Can they fight back here?

Runs : 0 Bowler: James Pattinson Wickets : 1
62.1
W
OUT! L.B.W. James Pattinson to Joe Denly. Seaming in length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, hit pad to. Denly plays a big drive but the ball nips back in and goes through the gate, hitting him on the back pad. There's a big appeal for LBW and Joel Wilson gives it out. Well if there's no inside edge I think Denly is done here, no review and Australia get the breakthrough with this change of ball. In the previous over Pattinson got the ball to swing away from Denly but this time it went straight towards the stumps and then nipped back in.

W
OUT! Caught & Bowled. Peter Siddle to Joe Root. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, in the air uncontrolled to short leg, by Siddle. That's a sharp one-handed return catch from Peter Siddle. Root was driving on the up and hit it very straight, Aleem Dar was taking evasive action. Siddle stuck out his right hand and grabbed the ball mid-flight to pick up a wicket that he's worked hard for. Australia needed that, can they capitalise now?

W
OUT! Caught. James Pattinson to Jason Roy. Back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot defending, outside edge in the air uncontrolled to second slip, by Smith. Edged again and this time the ball goes to hand, third time lucky for Pattinson against Roy. It was a back foot ball this time, Pattinson consistently testing Jason Roy's technique. The ball went off the outside edge and Steve Smith scooped it up low to the ground.

W
OUT! Bowled. Moeen Ali to Tim Paine. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, missed to. That's a pearler from Moeen. That will delight Nathan Lyon, though, who gets to have a bowl on this pitch on the last day. The perfect delivery from an off spinner to a right hander. Fizzed into the rough, ripped back through the gate, and it clatters into the off stump. Not much Paine can do about that.

W
OUT! Caught. Ben Stokes to Matthew Wade. Short, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, in the air uncontrolled to deep backward square leg, by Denly. Picks out the man perfectly in the deep! This bouncer doesn't get up very high at all, and Wade strikes it pretty cleanly as well. Hit flat and hard, but Denly doesn't have to move. Snaffled right on the boundary edge. Not a lot of celebrations from England. Wade is a bit miffed, but he walks off after a wonderful century.

OUT! Caught. Chris Woakes to Steven Smith. Out-swinging half volley, outside off stump on the front foot driving, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Bairstow. He's gone! Steve Smith nicks off! A loose drive a long way away from the body, with the ball swinging further away, and a healthly nick is gobbled up by Bairstow. What a knock, to go alongside his magnificent innings on day one.

OUT! Caught. Ben Stokes to Travis Head. Leg cutter back of a length, outside off stump on the back foot cutting, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Bairstow. England finally have that breakthrough! Some relief around the home crowd. Ben Stokes is the man to do it. Change in pace, bit of width, so Head wafts the bat at it. Don't think the Australian picked it, and he got a chunky nick behind to Bairstow. It just about carried to the keeper, and he swallowed it up.

W
OUT! Caught. Ben Stokes to Usman Khawaja. Length ball, to leg on the front foot defending, inside edge to wicketkeeper, by Bairstow. Stokes is often the man England turn to when they need to spark something and he has delivered once again here. With just his second delivery he gets the ball to jag back into the left-hander thanks to a scrambled seam and some rare zip off the pitch. Bairstow gobbled up the inside edge and the hosts can celebrate. Smith looks like he will hold the key for Australia just as he did in the first innings.

W
OUT! Caught. Moeen Ali to Cameron Bancroft. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the back foot working, bat-pad to short leg, by Buttler. Snaffled by the man under the lid, Moeen wheels away in celebration without even turning around because he knows there was some willow involved in that. Bancroft initially looked like he wanted to come down the pitch but got deceived by a flatter, quicker delivery and ended up in a really awkward position. The noise inside the ground is amazing, a really intimidating environment for the tourists.

W
OUT! Caught. Stuart Broad to David Warner. Seaming away length ball, outside off stump on the front foot Leave, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Bairstow. Massive appeal, all of the catchers behind the wicket are convinced there was an edge but strangely Broad isn't too sure. Root immediately wants to review it and he's the man with the power. Once again Warner wasn't sure whether to play at it and couldn't get his bat out of the way in time. The replays show a clear edge and the crowd begins to party as England get a big early scalp.

W
OUT! Caught. Pat Cummins to Chris Woakes. Off cutter short, outside off stump on the back foot Fended, Spliced to second slip, by Smith. There it is! Cummins rolls his fingers across it as he fires it into the surface. The ball grips, holds up, and Woakes doesn't know what to do with it. He ends up poking the bat at the ball, and chips it into the hands of second slip.Australia have done a thoroughly professional job today, and sealed the victory with ease. A massive win for the visitors, who go 1-0 up in the series. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon combined to run through the England batting line up, with no one in particular contributing massively for the home side. All of this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for one paritcular man, though. Steve Smith with two sensational hundreds set up the game for the Aussies. He was the star performer across the five days. Worrying signs for England, who seem very tired, and there is still four matches left to go!The teams head to Lord's for the second Test, which begins next Wednesday. Will Australia extend their lead? Or can England level it up?

OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Stuart Broad. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to first slip, by Smith. Two in two for Lyon, who now has six wickets to his name. Broad lunges forward, pushes out with hard hands, and the ball deflects off the outside edge to first slip this time. Smith isn't going to drop them.

W
OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Moeen Ali. Off break length ball, middle stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to second slip, by Warner. Finally Lyon gets one on the money, and Moeen is helpless in defence. Plays down the line, rags away to take the outside edge, and Warner snaps it up at second slip. Looks pretty simple, and now Australia are just two wickets away!

OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Ben Stokes. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, outside edge to wicketkeeper, by Paine. Two in two for Australia! A jaffer from Lyon, ripping it out of the rough, and a small deflection off the outside edge is gobbled up by Paine. Extra bounce off the deck, so a terrific take by the keeper. England are falling apart! 350 Test Match wickets for Nathan Lyon, a great achievement.

W
OUT! Caught. Pat Cummins to Jonny Bairstow. Short, outside off stump ducked Leave, Gloved to third slip, by Bancroft. The lack of bounce helps Cummins here! The fast bowler digs it into the pitch, so Bairstow tries to duck underneath the ball. He ends up just crouching into it. The ball bounces off the wristband, and loops up to the slip corden for a simple catch. A review was taken, as it struck Bairstow's forearm at the same time, but the replays are clear, it came off the wristband of the glove!

OUT! Bowled. Pat Cummins to Jos Buttler. Length ball, outside off stump on the back foot defending, missed to. Cummins strikes in the first over after lunch. England are crumbling to a massive defeat. Buttler is stuck on the crease, the ball scoots through a little low, and beats the bat to clip the top of off. Magnificent delivery, which was too good for Buttler.

OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Joe Root. Off break length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, inside edge to short leg, by Bancroft. Three for Lyon, four for Australia, and they are well on the way to going 1-0 up now. They get the big scalp in Joe Root. The first delivery in which he has jabbed at the ball with hard hands, and it squirts off the inside edge to short leg. Super reactions from Bancroft in at bat-pad. He plucks it up without any fuss.

OUT! Caught. Nathan Lyon to Joe Denly. Off break length ball, middle stump on the front foot flick, bat-pad to short leg, by Bancroft. Lyon strikes again! Denly is a little tentative on this delivery. It's whizzed down on a perfect line and length, Denly looks to tuck it through the onside, but gets a thin inside edge on it. The ball pops up off the pad, and it lobs into the hands of short leg for a simple grab.

Suddenly he comes charging down to Lyon, and attempts to hack him over cow corner with the turn. Doesn't get anywhere near the pitch, and it rags back through a huge gate to clatter into the stumps. An ugly way to go. Australia keep chipping away.

The ball balloons up off the shoulder of the bat, and loops into the hands for a simple grab.
