Jos Buttler’s 83 from 52 balls led England through India by 8 wickets in the 3rd T20I on Tuesday. This was the 3rd straight win for the chasing team in this series. Buttler’s aggressive tenor put England ahead with 57 for 1 in the first six overs, leaving the Indians out. Sundar gave his side some hope when he stumped Dawid Malan for 18, with a flat, 102kph fizzer.
However, the next man, Jonny Bairstow, kept Butler a company to finish with an unbeaten 40. Buttler scored his best T20I score that went past his previous best of 77 against Australia last year.
The Indian fielding was poor, with Kohli giving Butler a chance on 76 and Chahal giving life to Bairstow two overs later.
India after put to bat, and there were some late fireworks from Virat Kohli 77 not out on 46 balls with 8 fours & 4 sixes to push India into a respectable total. England’s bowlers were brilliant for the most part but succumbed to the pressure in death overs.
Bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood were particularly impressive, generating great pace and a good bounce. Wood got opener KL Rahul with the inside edge, cut the ball late, and hit the stumps. Rahul, who now has scores of 0, 0, and 1 in the series, squared and cut an embarrassing form.
Rohit Sharma, comfortably back, fell for a pull shot on 15. Ishan Kishan, the 2nd T20I hero, was similarly dismissed and given a top edge by Chris Jordan.
Kohli and Rishabh Pant 25 struck sensibly for the 4th wicket of 40 runs, for the unnecessary run-out of Pant’s wicket. After completing a comfortable double, Pant was sharply pushed by Kohli to take the third. Pant, who had lined up far beyond the stumps, had no chance of making the crease on the other side. It was one of the most premature dismissals that India made and looked struggling on 64 for 4.
The home team needs stuttering acceleration from 100 in 16 overs. Kohli responded to the call as he hit Jordan over the square leg fence. Wood had worse luck in the next over, was taken to a maximum at midwicket and long-off by Kohli. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya 17 was not at his best but managed to hit two sixes in point and third man boundary.
Late fireworks helped India to 56 runs in the last four overs, but it wasn’t enough to turn the game in their favor.
