India vs West Indies 1st Test Match Report
India built a strong start to their ICC World Test Championship campaign in Antigua, destroying West Indies by 318 runs. The thrashing came on the fourth day as Jasprit Bumrah added his mark to an exciting Sunday for Test cricket. The win also gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series as well as 60 points in their inaugural World Test Championship match.
West Indies were blown away by Bumrah’s five-wicket haul. Slumping to only 100 runs which were effectively under a session’s time costing them a 318 runs record away win by runs. In the process, Bumrah became the first bowler from Asia to take five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, South Africa, and the West Indies, in only his 11th Test making his debut in January 2018.
India set a target of 419 for the hosts after declaring on 343 for 7 with Ajinkya Rahane scoring a century and Hanuma Vihari scoring a quick 93. In reply, hosts only lasted 26.5 overs.
West Indies reshuffled their batting order, maybe because of Shai Hope long wicket keeping job and also Roston Chase bowled 38 overs. Both were pushed a bit down from their first-innings position. They eventually found themselves in the middle behind just 7.3 overs in the pursuit, trying to retrieve something for the hosts.
Before Bumrah’s magic, came Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari’s calm imposition of batting reality. The two shared a 135-run collaboration for the fifth Wicket after Kohli’s early dismissal on the day without adding to his overnight score of 51.
Kemar Roach the best bowler in the Test, though with a little fortune, showed a thistle with the bat as well. He struck five sixes, including three off one over of Jadeja. The last wicket put together West Indies’ highest partnership of the match with Miguel Cummins. From 50 for 9 to 100 in seven overs. Ishant took Roach’s wicket just 20 minutes from stumps as India clinched the win.
This win against Windies took Kohli to pass Ganguly’s 11 most away wins as Indian captain and equaling with Dhoni’s 27 overall wins.
